If You want to get into tattooing. Im all for it. Its super cool, in demand, and a great potential career path for creatives. But where to start ? Tattoo apprenticeships & Tattoo mentors can be really hard to come by. ESPECIALLY when you're just starting out. Listed bellow are some online course and certifications that are much more accessible, and can help you get started
Certificates & Online Training
Bloodborne Pathogens for Body and Tattoo Artists Certificate (YEARLY*)
By Protrainings - 19.95$
It's cheap, and it's an industry standard. Definitely would recommend taking this certificate before tattooing anybody. It's short and will give you a good idea of the potential risk's involved in the procedure of tattooing. So you can at least be aware of what you're getting into.
Bloodborne Pathogens, Infection Prevention and Control Training
by Progressive Mentorship ( Which is a Canadian Company, Big Plus ) - 107.35 $
This one was recommend to me by an experienced Artist. It can help you implement high safety standards in your work environment. Definitely adapt the information to your personal needs. It's on the pricier side. I would not recommend this training without having previously completed the standard Bloodborne Pathogens training by Protrainings mentioned above.
Tattoo Courses
More and more tattoo artist are offering online courses. Which is a great option if you are starting out on your own. Plus, you can learn something new form all of them. Here is one i took early on, it's by Polilla Tattoo on DOMESTIKA. It's really affordable & informative.
Equipment
Buying equipment when you're first starting out can be difficult. Some online stores will only sell to Tattoo Shops, or require you to prove yourself a Tattooer by linking your Socials. I would not recommend investing TOO MUCH money on equipment right away. You will need time to experiment and learn what works best for you. Larger platforms like Amazon offer you accessibility, variety ( a little to much variety if you ask me, but thats why i'm here to help you ) and affordability. Work with what is accessible to you for now. And upgrade as you go.
Tattoo Guns ( or machines, wtvr you want to call it )
Pro Tip - Get a Rotary Tattoo Machine with Wireless Power Supply
The rotary technology is, in my humble opinion, more user friendly ( less moving parts to worry about than a coil machine ) Most of them come with a wireless battery pack option or are even shaped like a pen. Which can feel more natural to Artist's who are just starting out. The battery pack is chargeable & give you full mobility while you tattoo. Which can help you through the early uncomfortable stages.
You can get pretty decent & cheap Tattoo Machines through amazon and i will link a few options bellow.
* WARNING i would not recommend using the inks that come complimentary with your Tattoo Machines. Invest in a bottle of good quality black ink and stick to that for now *
The company MAST also make's good afordable machines that some or the girls in my shop use.
I do like that the cheaper Tattoo Machines come with a variety of needle cartridges for you to experiment with, and sometimes even fake skin. Make sure to try them all out.
Massage Tables
I bought mine on Amazon. It's affordable, sturdy, comes in a variety of colours & easy to carry around if needed. linked bellow.
Storage
This is what i used at first. It keeps all of your equipment away form dust and potential contaminants. Its cost effective & easy to move around. Make sure to keep the inside clean & sterile.
PRO TIP. Get plastic organizers from Dollorama to place inside & keep your equipment organized.
